Questions and Answers

1. What are the best opera houses in Paris?

The two most important opera houses in Paris are Palais Garnier and Opéra Bastille, both operated by the prestigious Opera National de Paris.

Palais Garnier, inaugurated in 1875, is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. Designed by architect Charles Garnier, it is a masterpiece of 19th-century architecture, known for its lavish interiors, grand staircase, and the magnificent ceiling painted by Marc Chagall. The building is also closely associated with the legend of The Phantom of the Opera. Today, Palais Garnier primarily hosts ballet performances by the Paris Opera Ballet, as well as selected opera productions.

Opéra Bastille, opened in 1989, represents the modern face of the Paris Opera. Located at Place de la Bastille, it was designed to provide a larger and more technically advanced venue for opera productions. With a seating capacity of around 2,700, it is one of the largest opera houses in the world and hosts most of the major opera performances of the Paris Opera season.

2. How many opera theaters are in Paris?

Paris is home to two main opera houses where most major productions take place: Palais Garnier and Opéra Bastille, both part of the Opera National de Paris.

In addition to these, there are several smaller venues and theaters that host opera performances, such as Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and Opéra Comique, but the two Paris Opera houses are the primary hubs. So while the number of dedicated “opera venues” in Paris is limited, the city hosts a very rich and diverse opera season across multiple stages.

3. What should I wear to Paris Opera?

When attending Opera Performances in Paris, dress codes are generally smart and elegant, though they vary slightly depending on the performance and the time of day:

-Evening Performances: Men usually wear a suit or blazer with dress shoes; women often choose a cocktail dress, elegant skirt, or pantsuit. Some people still wear formal evening attire for gala nights.

-Matinee Shows: Smart casual is generally acceptable—think dress shirt and trousers for men, a nice dress or blouse with skirt/pants for women. Avoid sportswear, ripped jeans, or sneakers.

-Accessories: A shawl or light coat can be useful, especially in winter. Small handbags are practical, as large bags may need to be checked.

-Special Events: Gala nights or premieres may encourage more formal dress, including tuxedos or long evening gowns.

In general, the goal is to look polished and respectful, while keeping comfort in mind for a 2–4 hour performance. Parisians appreciate understated elegance, so avoid flashy or overly casual outfits.
